Trafalgar Square: Thu 7 December (time to be confirmed)
The lights will be switched on by HRH Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway. HRH Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, the Mayor of Oslo and the Mayor of Westminster will also be present.

Some key terms used in examination questions

Accounts for

 Explain the process or reason for something being the way it is.

Analyse

Explore the main ideas of the subject, show why they are improtant and how they are related. 

Calculate

Find out by using mathematics. 

Comment on

Discuss the subject, explain it and give an opinion on it. 

Compare

Show the similarities (but you could also point out the differences.) 

Complete

Finish off. 

Conclude

Decide after reasoning something out. 

Contrast

 Show the differences ('compare and contrast' questions are very common in exams - they want you to say how something is similar and how it may be different too.

留学前该如何办理成绩单

在联系留学过程中,成绩单是重要的申请材料之一。成绩单中显示出来的分数基本上就是申请人在校的学习成果,从中可以判断出该申请者有无学习上的实力和潜力。我国大学一般由教务处或外事办公室负责开具成绩单。开成绩单的一般过程如下:

  1.准备好所有要办理英文的中文原件或复印件,比如学位证书、毕业证书,来到学校教务处档案室(已毕业的学校)。 

  2.填写办理成绩单申请表,主要是办理的份数等;一般要多办几份,5份吧。

  3.交费,记得拿好发票;

  4.一些天后去核对,确认无误后放进信封,封装贴防伪标志即可(密封后学校盖章也可)。

  成绩单的形式与办理方法因学校而异,但通常在成绩单上显示的项目有:

  a.学校名称、教务长签名(盖章);

  b.学生姓名、性别、出生日期和申请人照片;

  c.系别、专业、学业年限、毕业后授予的学位;

  d.各学期所修课程、学分数(或学时数)及分数;

  e.在英文成绩单上应有分数换算的公式。

  在领到成绩单时,应该以自己申请学校规定的换算公式去换算自己大学成绩的GPA点数。如果情况允许的话,可在原始的成绩单中删去一至两门与自己申请专业关系不大,分数又低的课程,以免影响自己的GPA。当然不能删太多,因为那样会影响成绩单上的总学分数。

伦敦的历史

伦敦最早是一个凯尔特人的城镇,由罗马入侵者于公元50年左右建立,作为泰晤士河畔的一个港口,并命名为「Londinium」。公元7世纪罗马帝国灭亡后,Londinium遭弃城,撒克逊人于今Aldwych以西一英里处建立了Lundenwic的城镇。直到公元910世纪罗马伦敦老城才再次恢复人烟。

伦敦逐渐地发展、扩大,吸收了附近的村庄、聚居地方,向四面八方扩散。到17世纪时伦敦已经是当时大英帝国乃至欧洲最大的都市。1666年的伦敦大火灾毁坏了伦敦城内大部分的建筑(奇迹似的,死于这场大火的只有20多人),但大火后伦敦又立即开始了10年间的重建,包括圣保罗大教堂在内的标志性建筑都是在此期间开始动工的。

维多利亚时代,伦敦经历了大规模的发展。世界上第一条地铁的开通,公交车的营运,以及联系四方的铁路线,使伦敦的市容与交通面貌一新。伦敦市区在19世纪后半期居住人口突降(1851年:128000人;1871年:75000人;1901年:27000人),大量新建的建筑使伦敦从一座乔治风貌的城市转而成为维多利亚特色的城市。

伦敦最近100年来的大变化可说是始于第二次世界大战以后。大战期间,伦敦遭到纳粹德国空军的猛烈轰炸,期间超过3万的伦敦市民丧生,大部分建筑遭到破坏。20世纪5070年代,由于伦敦的重建未经统一规划,造成今天建筑多样化的格局,并成为当今伦敦的独特之处。

20世纪初,伦敦人大部分都使用煤作为家居燃料,产生大量烟雾。这些烟雾再加上伦敦气候,造成了伦敦「远近驰名」的烟霞,英语称为London Fog伦敦雾)。因此,英语有时会把伦敦称作「大烟」(The Smoke),伦敦并由此得名「雾都」。19521259日期间,伦敦烟雾事件令4000人死亡,政府因而于1956年推行了《空气清净法案》,于伦敦部分地区禁止使用产生浓烟的燃料。时至今日,伦敦的空气质量已经得到明显改观。
